The Pigtail by William Makepeace Thackery

William Makepeace Thackeray               Let's discuss this poem.                               The Pigtail         There lived a sage in days of yore ,               And he a handsome pigtail wore;               But wondered much and sorrowed more,                                                              Because it hung behind him.                                                                   He mused upon this curious case ,                                                                      And swore he'd change the pigtail's place ,                                                                And have it hanging at his face ,                                                                Not dangling there behind him.                                                                      Says he, "The mystery I've found -                                                                      Says he, "The mystery

I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree, And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made; Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee, And live alone in the bee-loud glade. And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow, Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings; There midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow, And evening full of the linnet’s wings. I will arise and go now, for always night and day I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore; While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey, I hear it in the deep heart’s core.           The Lake Isle is an island in the middle of the lake called Innisfree located in Ireland. The poet in his poem vividly paints the beauty and the serenity of nature through the lake Innisfree. The poet points out the soothing effect of nature on mankind using different techniques in the poem t

"Butterflies - We see them as pretty, little creatures scattered through the air, for we never hear the sound of their hearts thumping with fear."
